Pulling off one of these "Zandatsu" finishing moves is difficult, but very satisfying.

It's safe to say that some of the action in previous Metal Gear Solid titles is over-the-top, but nothing seen before in the series comes close to the kind of insanity packed into Revengeance. A lot of that is because over-the-top slash-'em-up action is something the team at Platinum Games, a venerable all-star team of veteran Japanese developers, has a knack for cooking up (see: Bayonetta). It's here where Metal Gear Rising's accessibility may come into question. Rising's story is tough to stay interested in and doesn't accomplish much of anything in terms of creating an incentive for players to press on. Instead, Revengeance's difficulty and challenging move execution are where the game's appeal lies. Even then, it's probably a title more for the hard-core action enthusiast who craves the 25-minute-and-up boss battle.Where to even start? Talking about the plot itself is a disservice to newcomers, as I truly think the game is best enjoyed with knowing the least amount of information as possible, but you can expect pretty much everything and anything. Ultraviolence, child soldiers, war ethics, that whole “nanomachine” schtick to be expected in every single Metal Gear game, a colorful cast of villains with really ridiculous outfits, long codec talks, wearing a god damn sombrero as a disguise, and having a robotic dog companion programmed with extra sassiness for some damn reason.

I actually think that The Twin Snakes walked so Metal Gear Rising could, uh, jump around like a Mexican bean wielding a katana.Īll you need to do afterwards is grab all of the action absurdity from The Twin Snakes, such as walking on top of missiles or jumping around like a ninja trained by the Cirque du Soleil, and you get Metal Gear Rising‘s plot, pacing and setting. That game, which featured all of the absurdity seen in Rising, was reviled by the more brainwashed die-hard followers of Kojima for being “too unrealistic”. Said lack of realism has never been criticised in Metal Gear Rising. If anything, it has been nearly unanimously praised. Metal Gear Solid has always been way too ridiculous for anyone to criticise it for realism anyway.īut here’s the fact: it was fun and exciting back in 2004 too, it was fun in 2013, and it’s fun in 2023. Though I have to admit that Phantom Pain‘s plot and cast of characters was way too stupid (and not in the fun way) for me to even consider endearing. I’ll talk about that game some other time. Gameplay-wise, Metal Gear Rising is your standard Platinum Games fare. Light attack, heavy attack, dodge, epic finishers, silky framerate, the whole nine yards. I loved the inclusion of a “ninja run” button that allowed me to jump through obstacles without thinking too much about it. It made the whole damn thing feel a lot more epic. Stealth, while encouraged, isn’t mandatory, and I never bothered trying to be stealthy. I was dead-on looking for brawls and trouble, as I’d be rewarded with points which would then be exchanged for upgrades and new weapons. Metal Gear Rising featured two main innovative ideas for its combat, one of them being pretty awesome, and the other one being, uh, divisive. Giving players a “free cut” mode, allowing them to dice enemies in any direction they could imagine, was awesome.

Giving Raiden a free health and stamina boost when finishing an enemy off with this method was twice the fun. Mulaney has followed this up with two more musical tributes to NYC staples, " Bodega Bathroom," which borrows from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," and " Airport Sushi" which has nods to many famous musicals like "Annie" and "Phantom of the Opera." But the original will always be our favorite.Parrying on the other hand, well, wasn’t as fun.

Plus Mulaney had co-written the sketch with Colin Jost in 2010, so it's extremely satisfying that it finally made it to air. Their waiter, John Mulaney, responds with disbelief, and the entire diner turns into one big "Les Misérables" tribute - we promise it makes sense. The sketch focuses on two diner patrons, played by Chris Redd and Pete Davidson, and their desire to order lobster at an NYC diner. "Diner Lobster," which the Atlantic called " the best 'Saturday Night Live' sketch in ages," aired in 2018 when Mulaney, a former writer on the show and successful comedian, returned to host the show for the first time.
